A Lullaby from God

March 2010

My husband was called to go to Melbourne (Australia) to work on a project for 4 months. This news came just last Thursday, the day before I resigned from my job. We were given only 2 days notice before he had to go, so it was very sudden and badly timed as I face a life of being jobless alone. I dreaded my first night alone, in a place (Wellington) where I had not yet felt settled and at a time of hassle at work.

As a little girl growing up in Indonesia, I used to love the sound of crickets singing (day and night). In the UK, where I lived for 30 years, I had never heard such noises and have missed that. Here in New Zealand however, especially in the summer, they sing so loudly and beautifully. I enjoy hearing them. I hear them often in the day time, but not at night time.

On my first night alone in NZ, I heard the sound of the crickets singing as I was getting ready for bed. I thought I was imagining it as my window was still closed. But then as I opened the window, the sound became louder and clearer. Yes, they were there, singing their hearts away - just underneath the window. It was 1:00 AM in the morning, and they were singing!

The wind picked up severely (Wellington is a very windy place, no exaggeration!), but I could still hear them above the wind.

How amazing I thought...!!

Then I realised the crickets singing was a lullaby from God to help me sleep during a time of distress, and to watch over me. He had sent them despite the very bad weather conditions (it was pretty stormy) and had made sure that my ears can hear them. They sang and sang and sang until I fell asleep.

Psalm 4:8

I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

God knows and cares for even the smallest of our needs. And He knows just what it takes to comfort us.
