The Garage Break-In

January 2009

Noise Outside

It was a bitterly cold night; the snow had been falling all day in inches and virtually everyone were huddled up indoors. I was no exception, but I was alone indoors in a great big house. My husband was abroad.

It was 11:00 pm, I had considered ironing my clothes which would have meant I would be at the rear side of the house. That night, however, a little voice in my heart urged me not to iron, but to do some emails instead which would place me at the front part of the house. As I typed my emails, I heard a noise outside the house. I stopped to think for a moment if I should be concerned about it, but then I remembered it was "bin" night. It was probably my neighbour wheeling his bin up the hill. So, I continued to type my emails without any more care or thought.

Just then the little voice in my heart spoke to me saying,

"Look outside your window".

I stopped typing and thought,

"Ah, it's bin night, nothing to worry about!"

So, I ignored the little voice and continued to type. It spoke to me again, this time a bit louder,

"Look outside your window!"

Again, I ignored it. The voice kept repeating itself again and again, and I kept ignoring it again and again until finally the little voice screamed at me so loud that my heart was startled. My heart started to feel very uneasy and restless. It bothered me so much that I finally decided to look out of my window.

A Crime in Progress

There, to my horror, I saw two hooded men attempting to break into my garage. They had already lifted the garage door half open, and were about to go in. My instinct kicked in, and I began to bang very loudly on my window with my hands. They heard the noise of my banging, and ran off up the hill. My whole body was shaking, I was so shocked at what I had seen. I was also afraid as I was on my own. I rang my neighbour who was already tucked up in bed, and asked him for help.

I went outside to stand in front of my half-opened garage door in case the men came back. I was shortly joined by my neighbour who examined the damaged garage door. Thankfully, he was able to make it shut again, but it was somewhat damaged and would need proper fixing in the morning. He then helped me to ring the police, and stayed with me until the police came and investigated. The police stayed and scoured the area for the two men, but they were nowhere to be found.

A Faithful God

I went back into the house, and reflected on what just happened. Then I realised that the little voice that spoke to me all evening was the Holy Spirit, the voice of God! I thanked God for His protection on my property as well as His protection on me (being all alone). As I tucked myself up in bed, I opened the Bible at random, the following scripture leapt up at me:

Psalm 91: 9-11

9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.

11For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;

He is a faithful God, and He has once again rescued me! Praise and glory be to God!
