The Power of Giving Thanks - Part 1

March 2010

A Revelation from God

I have had to resign from my job this weekend. In all my troubles, I always consult God about what I should do. In the last 2 weeks or so, God had given me 4 scriptures in the Bible that point to me having to give up my job. Leaving a job can make anyone feel uncertain about the future, afraid of not having enough to pay the bills or to eat.

Being a loving and faithful provider that God is, He showed me the scripture about Jesus feeding the four thousand with bread and fish (Mark 8:1-12), and also Jesus feeding the five thousand (Mark 6:30-44):

"When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people, and they did so. 7They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. 8The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over."

Having read that story so many times over the years, it was so easy to glance past it. This time, however, God stopped me because He was about to show me something new hidden in the passage. This was the essence of what He wanted to show me:

Jesus gave thanks to the food before it was distributed - this was the KEY to the food being multiplied!

Without that thanks, there would NOT have been enough food to go round.

This made me think of my meals; the food I eat. I always give thanks to Him, but as I ruminated, these thoughts came to me:

    • How often do we just "recite" our thanks out of habit, and not out of sincerity?

    • Or perhaps sometimes we forget to say thanks due to extreme hunger (couldn't wait to ravish the food)?

    • Or perhaps we hadn't ever thought of saying thanks before we eat? It just never occurred to us.

Suddenly His message came to life - that if I was to say thanks sincerely with all my heart before I eat my food, the food I eat will be multiplied!! Glory be to God, what a revelation! This doesn't mean that I am suddenly going to see 4 thousand plates appearing on my kitchen table for me to eat :) No, of course not, but it does mean that there will be a plate for me tomorrow, the day after, and all the days of my life! The food will be multiplied for me for as long as I need it, and furthermore - there will be leftovers!

God then showed me that for anything we thank Him for, it will be multiplied! This is why it is written:

1 Thessalonian 5:18

"... give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

Thanksgiving is powerful!

Thanksgiving will unleash and multiply the blessings of God. I had never seen it quite in this light before. I thanked God for this insight. I can go forth with peace in my heart as I give up my job because I know He will provide for all my needs as I continually keep giving thanks to Him.

Thank Him SINCERELY with ALL YOUR HEART!

There is the POWER OF MULTIPLICATION in giving sincere thanks to Him who loves you, and provides for you.

See Part 2 of this story - of what happened to me when I kept giving thanks to God with sincerity in my heart for every single meal I ate.
